Coral Show Patrons: What To Bring To A Coral Show

With this holiday’s coral show coming up, let’s refresh on what to expect and what to bring!

What to Expect

A coral show typically takes place at a large, indoor venue with a plethora of booths hosted by different hobbyists and companies. These shows are a fantastic way to purchase coral from reputable sources at an affordable price and learn more about the hobby! Vendors are excited to show pieces they’ve aquacultured and make connections with the reefing community.

What to Bring

Before attending a coral show, it is important to come in with a plan on how your new pieces will make it home safe and sound. Coral, like any organism, prefer stable water parameters and a smooth transition into their new environment.

  1. Insulated Cooler Bag

Keeping your coral in an insulated cooler bag will give the water the best chance at stabilizing its temperature. Depending on the environment, it may be beneficial to bring cold or heat packs to use accordingly. If you’re worried about fluctuating temperatures, consider bringing bags of water from your own aquarium and lining the bag with them. The more water, the less fluctuation. If it’s on wheels, even better!

     2. Coral Cups/Bags

Most vendors will provide your purchase in a cup or bag, but this isn’t always the case. Bring cups with a watertight lid or small bags (not ziplock, they leak!) just in case.

     3. Reefing Glasses

There’s no guarantee that booths will have enough glasses to go around, so bring your own!

     4. Cash

Many vendors may not accept card or digital payment, so play it safe and bring cash. It may even save your budget!

     5. Loupe

To make sure your piece is parasite and hitchhiker free, bring a loupe or magnifier to inspect coral.
